Merriman family business and personal papers, 1840-1915.

Business and family correspondence, legal documents, and bills, receipts and accounts of Waterbury, Connecticut, suspender manufacturer and businessman Charles B. Merriman. Of interest are letters from his father William while William was at the Retreat for the Insane in Hartford. Among the bills and receipts are those for tuition for Charles' daughters Helen, Sarah and Margaret, who attended a private school run by Mary Ann Clark, and documents related to the business firm Hotchkiss & Merriman. Correspondents include Charles' children, his business partner Julius Hotchkiss, and the Willimantic Duck Co. Also includes correspondence of grandson Buckingham Merriman, and the estate records of Edward Field, Mary Margaret's father.

Mary Clark was born in Breckinridge County, Kentucky around 1831. Clark married George T. Walker in Breckinridge County on October 1, 1853. They had four children together, but only Gideon P. and Caroline Elizabeth survived. The marriage, as described by her mother, was a difficult one. Sometime after 1859, Walker left Clark and moved to California. In October 1861, Clark left Breckinridge County and joined a company of Kentucky cavalry under the name of Henry Clark.
